However, there are many interesting movies in Bollywood that break the stereotypes and there are those that follow the cliche but still make interesting movies. Here I present a list of top 10 horror movies. If that seems like a small list I will also add a number of a few more movies that are interesting as well.
October is increasingly becoming the month of horror around the world. Since we live in the Internet age hopefully some of this "air" has caught you because here I present a list of top 10 horror movies. If that seems like a small list I will also add a number of a few more movies that are interesting as well. And if you still want more I am adding a list of Top 10 Murder Mysteries and Top 10 Psychological thrillers.
NOTE: These are not ranked, this is a random list.
10 - Naina - Urmila Matondkar has acted in several interesting movies. But later she continued to act in horror movies. What may surprise you is that these are quite decent movies with a good plot, good effects and good acting. Naina is one such movie. Check out this movie.
9) Bhool Bhulaiya: You may already have watched this movie, in either of the languages it was released. Perhaps you think the original was better. Anyway not all of us understand the original language. Also it is not just the plot that is interesting about the movie. The settings in the historically rich Rajasthan and the dialogues full of desi phrases lends it a very authentic atmosphere.
8 - Woh Kaun Thi: This is the first horror movie I ever watched when I was 6 or 7, I don't remember anything except a gate opening by itself. Still this movie is very special to me.
If you are not the kind who watches old movies, this movie might change your mind. They are called classics for a reason. The plot will seem as original as it was that many years ago. The songs seem unnecessary but if you watch Bollywood movies you must be used to song-and-dance. Watch this movie for a wonderful story and wonderful acting. 7) Alone: You might wonder why I haven't included the better known Raaz if I had to choose a movie like this. Raaz although a decent movie has a predictable plot. Alone has a much better plot line and better graphics despite not being that famous. (More movies like this: Raaz, 1920, Atma)
6) 1920: This movie has a good storyline, good pace and a beautiful setting, and does not rely solely on gore to sell the horror.
5) Bhoot Bangla: Welcome to typical Bollywood horror, there is "purani haveli" "jaydaad ka malik" elements. What you were not expecting is the pairing of Mehmood as a hero and Tanuja as a heroine. This movie is also a fest of weird, kooky faces and they are all unforgettable. Watch them in the movie for the complete effect. (More movies from this genre include Mahal, Bees Saal Baad (1962,) )
4) Duvidha: This is a wonderful movie originally written by Rajasthani writer Vijaydaan Detha. It attempts to capture the folk literature of the pre-Zamindari period. Recently there was a laughable remake of this movie. But it would be better to watch this period movie.
3) Continuing in the Ram Gopal Varma tradition, Darna Mana Hai and Darna Zaroori Hai are a series of quick short films. In fact in the beginning of Darna Zaroori Hai they make fun of the entire Ramsay way of story telling. These are wonderful stories that do not get into the cliches at all but depend entirely on the plot for the horror. There are some stories that need special mention, in Darna Zaroori Hai, the story with Amitabh Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh is a wonderful display of the concept of "timing" in acting.
2) Darna Zaroori Hai is in the same strain as Darna Mana Hai but the stories are just as interesting. Once again, the horror is expressed without any gore or any over the top acting. In fact, it starts with ridiculing the genre.
Bhoot: In and around 2003 when this movie was made, Ram Gopal Verma, the director of the movie was experimenting a lot with the horror genre. As you can see, the above two movies are also from the Factory, as his production house was known. So despite having all the standard elements of a ghost movie it is one of the first of the Bollywood movies where horror movies which could be appreciated for its great editing, sound and above all the terrific acting skills of Ajay Devgan, Urmila Matondkar, Nana Patekar, Seema Biswas and Victor Banerjee. Watch this movie for a contemporary story that seems to fit the urban setting and time and there are great scenes than this trailer betrays.
