83 2021 Movie Review

83 has been a long awaited movie. We have seen Ranveer Singh's display pic as Kapil Deo for some time now. He has been constantly impressing the crowds and the critics equally. Personally I have not followed cricket but I have mostly liked the well made cricket movies like Lagaan or MS Dhoni.

I was born during the 83 World Cup win but I don't have any memory of the event, of course, I have seen the iconic clip of the victory. So this has an appeal for the millennial crowd and the older one for sure. The trailer looked great, the ensemble cast look promising, so what went wrong?

The movie is of course everything you want in a commercial movie, isme drama hai, action hai romance hai thodasa! It is not that the lead take up an uneven amount of screen time and Deepika's role is not that long. They don't overplay or underplay the racism angle. One might have suspected that based on the trailer, but even that is balanced. It even evokes the kind of response it expects.  Why not  the director Kabir Khan has made the sentimental Bajrangi Bhaijaan. So why did it fail?

The reason is perhaps the one that has been mentioned for quite some time now. The audience is changing. The people who will come to watch the movie has certain expectations, it is informed. This is the same thing that took down Thugs of Hindostan. They read up on the thuggee cult, some read the book and this audience knowing Aamir were dismayed at the hopeless serving of drama and action. This is not the crowd that can easily lap up anything just because it has the patriotism flavour.

There is no doubt this movie will be definitely watched on OTT platforms but Bollywood has to understand its audience now. Ranveer is a talented guy and Kabir Khan is an entertaining director but they just started telling a story that is highly anticipated and it doesn't work just because of specific people expect it to be.
